Ein Projekt von ^^^Brave New Alps^^^^^ in Zusammenarbeit mit der Gemeinde Franzensfeste im Rahmen von Manifesta 7, der europäischen Biennale für zeitgenössische Kunst, die vom 19. Juli bis zum 02. November 2008 in Trentino-Südtirol stattfindet.
FORTEZZA OPEN ARCHIVE FRANZENSFESTE
Die Gemeinde Franzensfeste durchlebt einen Moment des Umbruchs: Die Aktivitäten, auf welchen die Wirtschaft und das Leben des Dorf wurzelte – Eisenbahn, Zoll, Pappenfabrik – existieren nicht mehr oder nur noch in sehr reduzierter Form und viele der bis in die 90-er Jahre belebten Häuser stehen heute leer. Das Fehlen von Arbeitsplätzen und das Vorhandensein sowohl von funktionslosen Wohn- als auch Arbeitsgebäuden lässt die Einwohner mit wenig Zuversicht in die Zukunft blicken.
Die Öffnung der Festung, welche sich bis 2005 unter der Leitung des italienischen Heeres befand, lässt (bei manchen) im Dorf Hoffnung auf einen neuen Aufschwung für das Dorf aufkommen, viele sehen die Festung jedoch noch als einen Fremdkörper, der außerhalb ihrer Identität liegt.
In diesem Sinne will das Projekt von ^^^Brave New Alps^^^^^ eine Brücke zwischen Manifesta 7, die in der Festung stattfindet, und den Einwohnern von Franzensfeste schlagen, damit diese erste große kulturelle Veranstaltung auch im Dorf ihre Spuren permanent hinterlässt.
Soziale Situation
In Südtirol ist Franzensfeste ein Paradebeispiel von Integration zwischen der deutschen und der italienischen Sprachgruppe. Dessen sind sich die Bewohner bewusst und leben diese Integration mit viel Selbstbewusstsein.
In den letzten Jahren ist der Anteil an nicht-Italienern im Dorf bedeutend angestiegen. Dies wird teilweise mit einigem Argwohn wahrgenommen und die Integration scheint in diesem Bereich nur zwischen Kindern und Jugendlichen reibungslos zu funktionieren.
Interventionen in Franzensfeste
Inhabitation
Vom 6. Juni bis zum 10. August arbeitet ^^^Brave New Alps^^^^^ in der seit 10 Jahren unbenutzten „Tennis Bar“ von Franzensfeste. Hierbei geht es den Künstlern darum, ein Gefühl für das Dorf zu kriegen und Kontakte zu den Einwohnern zu knüpfen.
Archivlabor
Das digitale Archiv des Projekts FORTEZZA OPEN ARCHIVE FRANZENSFESTE wird im Laufe von Manifesta 7 von den Einwohnern mit Bildern, Erzählungen und Geschichten zum Dorf gefüllt werden. Das Archivlabor, in dem dieser Teil des Projekts stattfindet, befindet sich in der Festung.
Sammeln von Erzählungen zum Dorf und Kinoabend
Von Juni bis Juli sammelt ^^^Brave New Alps^^^^^ Geschichten zur Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft des Dorfes in Form von Video-Fragmenten. Diese Fragmente ergeben ein sozio-geographisches Mapping von Franzensfeste. Ausschnitte aus diesen Erzählungen werden an einem Kinoabend Ende Juli im Dorf vorgeführt. Die Veranstaltung wird in einem der verlassenen Bahnhofsgebäude des Orts stattfinden. Weitere Ausschnitte aus den Erzählungen werden über das online Archiv zugänglich gemacht.

Zukunftsszenarien
Durch einen 1 ½ tägigen Workshop am Samstag, den 9. August und Sonntag, den 10. August in der Festung, wird den Einwohnern von Franzsensfeste die Möglichkeit gegeben, gemeinsam Szenarien für die Zukunft des Dorfes auszuarbeiten: Dabei sollen alle die Möglichkeit haben, einen Beitrag zu leisten, um große als auch weniger große Zukunftsszenarien entwickeln zu können.
Am Ende des Workshops werden alle Teilnehmer mit einem „Instant Buch“, das alle erarbeiteten Ergebnisse und Vorschläge enthält, nach hause gehen.

FORTEZZA OPEN ARCHIVE FRANZENSFESTE
La comunità di Fortezza sta vivendo un momento di svolta: le attività sulle quali si basava l’economia e la vita del paese – ferrovia, dogana, fabbrica di cartone – hanno cessato di esistere o continuano ad esserci solo in maniera molto ridotta; molti degli edifici che fino agli anni ‘90 erano abitati ora sono in disuso. La mancanza di posti di lavoro e la presenza di edifici privi di ogni funzione fanno sì che gli abitanti guardino al futuro con poco ottimismo.
L’apertura del forte, che fino al 2005 era sotto il controllo dell’Esercito Italiano, fa sorgere nuove speranze per una ripresa del paese; molti tuttavia vedono il forte ancora come un’entità aliena che non fa parte dell’identità di Fortezza.
In questo senso il progetto di ^^^Brave New Alps^^^^^ costituisce un ponte tra Manifesta 7, che ha luogo nel forte, e gli abitanti di Fortezza, in modo che questo primo evento culturale di grande portata lasci delle tracce permanenti nel paese.
Situazione sociale
In Sudtirolo Fortezza è un modello per quanto riguarda l’integrazione fra il gruppo linguistico tedesco e quello italiano. Gli abitanti sono consapevoli di questo fatto e vivono l’integrazione con molta confidenza.
Negli ultimi anni la percentuale di non-italiani facenti parte del paese si è alzata notevolmente. Questo fenomeno viene in parte percepito con diffidenza e apparentemente l’integrazione funziona bene solamente fra bambini e adolescenti.
Interventi a Fortezza
Inhabitation
Dal 6 giugno al 10 agosto ^^^Brave New Alps^^^^^ lavora nel “Bar del tennis” di Fortezza, in disuso da 10 anni. In questo periodo gli artisti cercano di sviluppare una sensibilità per il paese e di stabilire contatti con gli abitanti.
Laboratorio d’archivio
L’archivio digitale del progetto FORTEZZA OPEN ARCHIVE FRANZENSFESTE verrà riempito dagli abitanti con foto, racconti e storie durante il periodo di Manifesta 7. Il laboratorio d’archivio, nel quale si svolge questa parte del progetto, è situato all’interno del forte.
Raccolta di racconti e cinema
Da giugno a luglio ^^^Brave New Alps^^^^^ colleziona racconti sul passato, il presente e il futuro di Fortezza sotto forma di frammenti video. Insieme questi frammenti formeranno una mappa socio-geografica del paese. Parti dei racconti verranno proiettati in paese in una serata di cinema alla fine di luglio. Questo evento avrà luogo in uno degli edifici dismessi della ferrovia. Tutti i frammenti saranno resi accessibili attraverso l’archivio online.

Scenari per il futuro
In un workshop di 1 ½ giorni che si terrà sabato 9 agosto e domenica 10 agosto nel forte, gli abitanti di Fortezza avranno la possibilità di sviluppare insieme scenari per il futuro del paese: tutti avranno la possibilità di dare un contributo e di sviluppare scenari più o meno complessi.
Alla fine del workshop tutti i partecipanti riceveranno un “libro istantaneo” contenente tutti i risultati e le proposte del workshop.

FORTEZZA OPEN ARCHIVE FRANZENSFESTE
The commune of Franzensfeste-Fortezza is experiencing a moment of change: The activities upon which the village’s economy and life were based – railway, customs duty, cardboard factory – ceased to exist or continue to exist only in a very reduced form; many of the buildings which up to the ’90s were full of life, now stand empty. The missing of workplaces and the presence of functionless houses and office buildings let the inhabitants look at the future with little optimism.
The opening of the fortress, which until 2005 was under the control of the Italian military, lets (some of) the inhabitants hope for a new revival of the village, but still a huge part of the village sees the fortress as external to their own identity.
In this sense the project by ^^^Brave New Alps^^^^^ is aiming at bridging the gap between Manifesta 7, which takes place inside the fortress, and the inhabitants of Franzensfeste-Fortezza in order to make this important cultural event leave some permanent traces in the village.
Social situation
In South Tyrol Franzensfeste-Fortezza is a role model in regard of the integration between the German and Italian language groups. The inhabitants are aware of this uniqueness and live this integration with a lot of self-confidence.
In the last years the percentage of non-Italian citizens living in the village has notably risen. This fact is partly looked upon with distrust and the integration seems to work without friction just among the children and the teenagers.
Interventions in Franzensfeste-Fortezza
Inhabitation
In the period between the 6th June and the 10th August ^^^Brave New Alps^^^^^ is working inside the “Tennis Bar” of the village, which has been unused for the last 10 years. The scope of the inhabitation is to develop a sensitivity for the village and to build up contacts with the inhabitants.
Archive laboratory
The digital archive of the project FORTEZZA OPEN ARCHIVE FRANZENSFESTE will be filled with images and stories by the inhabitants during the period of Manifesta 7. The archive laboratory, in which this part of the project takes place, is situated in the fortress.
Collecting stories of the village and cinema evening
From June to July ^^^Brave New Alps^^^^^ collects stories about the past, the present and the future of the village in the form of video interviews.
Together, these fragments are a socio-geographic mapping of Franzensfeste-Fortezza. Parts of these interviews are going to be projected during a cinema evening at the end of July. This event will take place in one of the dismissed railway buildings. All parts of the interviews are accessible over the on-line archive.

Scenarios for the future
Through a workshop of one and a half days in the fortress, on the 9th and 10th August, we will give the inhabitants of Franzensfeste-Fortezza the possibility to work out scenarios for the future of their village. Here everyone should get the possibility to work out more or less complex scenarios.
At the end of the workshop all the participants will be handed out an “instant book” holding all the results of the event.
